Any company, institution, society or association, whether incorporated or unincorporated, which was formed to promote and participate in the study and research of genealogy, family or local history, heraldry and allied subjects and which is bound by a constitution, rules or by-laws approved by its members is eligible to apply for Member Society membership of the Society. (GSV Rule 9.5)

Applications for admission as a Member Society must be on the appropriate form, available from the Society, and be accompanied by the appropriate fees.

Member Society benefits

  • Receive a mailed copy of our quarterly journal Ancestor 
  • Receive the monthly GSV e-News
  • Attend an Annual meeting of Member Societies, with up to 2 delegates
  • Showcase your society in Ancestor free of charge (All Ancestor content is subject to editorial discretion)
  • Advertise events in the GSV e-News and/or Ancestor free of charge (All Ancestor content is subject to editorial discretion)
  • Have access to GSV webcasts via the Member Society Representative
  • Receive special rates for Volunteer and Asset Insurance
  • Have the opportunity to participate in a group public liability insurance scheme
  • Have the opportunity to participate in the Association Board Member Liability Insurance scheme (cover for Officers/Councillors of your society)
  • Listing on the GSV web site (The GSV cannot be held responsible for the privacy practices of Member Society websites listed on the GSV website)
  • Annual listing in Ancestor
  • Members can enter the GSV Writing Prize
  • Assistance from GSV in sourcing guest speakers for your society

Member Society representative

The nominated representative of the society can:

  • Attend the GSV AGM and vote on behalf of the Member Society
  • Research on behalf of the Member Society using GSV Research services at the Member rates
  • Attend the GSV Library
  • Attend GSV events on the same basis as ordinary members
  • Have access to the 'members only area' of the website on behalf of the Member Society
  • Temporarily suspend their own personal GSV membership during their time as a representative
  • Access current and all past editions of the Ancestor journal online 

Member Society obligations

  • Keep the GSV informed of changes to the names and contact details of office bearers and the society representative and of any changes in the Society’s constitution, rules or by-laws.
  • Keep the GSV promptly informed of any changes in the location of the Society’s premises and for insurance purposes, any changes in security or fire protection services
  • Provide a copy of any Society newsletters to the GSV by emailing to serials@gsv.org.au
  • The Society Representative should be aware of the GSV Rules, particularly Rules 9(5) and Rules 10 to 18
